Furries at The Union Hotel
“Fortune favors the bold.” – Akash Lal, Owner, The Union Hotel
This is a funny story.
- My parents were restaurateurs. I grew up watching them carefully renovate the bottom floor of the Adams & Co. Building. Formerly known as The Adams Express. We opened the Elegant Noodle at 1012 2nd Street sometime in the late 70’s. As a kid, I fell in love with the wooden sidewalks and heavy wood doors that stood street to ceiling. I loved the cornices, and masonry, the cobblestone streets and feeling like I walked back through time.
- I took our daughter and her friends to show her the site of our old restaurant. Our daughter attended a performing and fine arts high school in Natomas, CA. One of her many passions is costume design. Her ‘fursona’ was created from her own imagination. We had attended conventions and events for years and she became a Furry Celebrity. She and her friends were all in costume that day. So it was quite the entourage. Walking past the doors of the Union Hotel, a nicely dressed man threw open the doors and said “Furries! , I love Furries!”. He asked if we wanted to come see the hotel he just bought. I wasn’t sure if he was kidding, but we wanted to see the top floors of the Union, so we agreed.
- Our host, I learned, was in fact the new owner of the Union Hotel. We became fast friends. Akash always had his finger on the pulse of what was coming next. As a promoter, I appreciated that. We ended up collaborating together on many projects for the Union Hotel. Whatever brought income to the hotel and made his tenants happy, I helped with.
- We started with fresh branding and cleanup for the website. The building was full of tenants. We had to bring everyone together in a cohesive way , yet still allow tenants individual branding to stand. The Union Hotel Website became a clean UX design of the foyer of a hotel and each floor in a mock elevator button format. This allowed visitors to find venue’s quickly and tour as though you were present. Later we added individual branding for the owner’s venture on the top floor for The Union Lounge. From there, we filmed video promo’s for The Union Lounge and the new resident musical guest DJ MARS.
